Legends & Lore Markers

North Carolina is home to countless ghost stories, mysterious creatures, and enduring local legends. Carolina Haints believes these traditions are an important part of our cultural heritage—and deserve to be remembered.

Through the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Legends & Lore® marker program, Carolina Haints has secured grants and coordinated permanent markers recognizing three North Carolina legends. From researching and writing applications to working with local partners, arranging installation, and organizing dedication ceremonies, Carolina Haints oversees each project from beginning to end.

Each marker also features a QR code linking visitors to a short original storytelling video, bringing the legend to life right where its story is remembered.

The markers are funded through the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s program, with the North Carolina Folklife Institute serving as its statewide folklore-review partner.
